The Department of Chemistry at Banaras Hindu University is one of the few departments established at the very inception of the university in 1916 by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji. Over the decades, it has flourished under the guidance of eminent educationists including Prof. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Prof. Bawa Kartar Singh, and Padma Bhushan Prof. Gurubaksh Singh, and has produced an illustrious line of alumni including Bharat Ratna Prof. C. N. R. Rao, Padma Shri Prof. V. K. Singh, Prof. J. S. Yadav, and Prof. Vijay Nair, among many other distinguished names in science. The department remains deeply committed to quality education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, while actively pursuing cutting-edge research in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, Photochemistry, Applied Electrochemistry, Theoretical Chemistry, Molecular Electronics, and Analytical Chemistry. Research activities are supported by several national funding agencies including DST, SERB, CSIR, UGC, DBT, DRDO, BRNS etc. Holding the prestigious status of a Centre of Advanced Study with DST-FIST and UGC-SAP recognition, the department stands today as a vibrant center of scientific excellence and innovation.
